Fola’s Story: Episode 4

Episode 4

I needed that sleep as I yawned and checked the time, it was 4am and I seemed to have forgotten all the havoc I had caused until my phone beeped again. I checked the screen and in my 27 years on earth I had never seen that much notifications, not even on my birthday! I first checked the call log, Folake had tried to reach me, how could I have slept off without checking on her, I dialed her number back. “Hey sis, how far, I’ve been trying to call you, I was worried sick about you Sade, why did you involve my dad, why did you post that video Sade, you’ve ruined me”, her tone went from friendly to words said between tears, I was confused.

“Fola, I watched a man beat you, I watched him punch you in the stomach and you expected me to keep quiet? Your family wouldn’t react so I took it to the internet, sis I wasn’t thinking, I just needed you to be helped”, I broke into tears too. I stared at Fola’s face on my screen, the beautiful girl everyone had a crush on was looking worse than a shadow of herself. “Fola, what’s really happening, I need to know, talk to me, where is Chris” and then a knock came on her door and I watched Folake jump, every sound made my sister scared. She placed the camera where I could see it and gave me a sign to keep quiet. I was smarter this time to know not to screen record. It was Dennis, her brother who she was meant to live with in Italy, he pushed his way into the house while shouting at Folake, I had never seen Dennis that angry the years I’ve known him. While I was still trying to figure out what was happening, he slapped Folake, took something from her bag that was hanging on the wall and banged the door behind him while leaving. I watched Fola sit on the floor and break into tears, this was too much and I really needed to know what was happening. “Sis! You have to let me know what’s going on, please talk to me”, I pleaded while she shook her head and ended the call. I called Folake back but she already had put off her phone.

I hated that I had been caught up in this drama but then I needed to get to the end of it, I needed to understand what was happening. A call from my step-brother distracted me.

“Sade, what’s happening, why are you everywhere on the internet, what’s happening to Folake, I thought she was in Italy for her masters, Sade kilo sele?” I had no idea how to start responding to these questions, my stepbrother was the only other family I had apart from Folake. I told him everything because I needed to talk to someone. “Folake is in a huge mess and I hate that she has me involved already, I wish I didn’t know anything about this bros, now there’s no going back, I need to know what’s happening before it all goes worse”. My stepbrother and I talked for a while with him advising me to avoid the Badmus’ family and also about people online saying that Engr Badmus wasn’t the type of man to mess with, “He has people everywhere covering his evil deeds, I heard Chris was picked up this morning by the Italian police after that video went viral, people have been trying to reach out to you to know the full story, you need to choose a side, help Folake or ignore everyone”, he ended the call with small talk about coming to Lagos to visit me when next he comes back.

How did my life go from a normal video call with my sister to me trying to solve a case I had no clue about. Before I opened my twitter, I called Folake one more time, she didn’t pick.

I heard the woman beater has been arrested”

“Engr Badmus is on the news again? That man’s cup suppose don full , I’m not even surprised”

“I hope the Sade girl is okay, who knows how I can reach her”

“@_sade27 please send a dm when you see this”

I have always sat in the comfort of my home to read stories about people on the internet, maybe it goes turn by turn and this was my turn. My phone rang again, it was Folake calling…
