Fola’s Story: Episode 1

May 1, 2020

I have been hit more times than I know, about the sad reality of my sister’s life. She left so many signs, that I ignored because they kept on coming in and I considered her a pest, phone calls I wouldn’t take because Folake was bugging me with it. Sometimes when I don’t pick those calls, she sends endless messages to my phone. I wasn’t a mean person but then I was angry because she always went back to those men even after every advice.

Folake and I have been friends since our high school days, we were an uneven pair. While Fola had the curliest natural hair ever, I was bald to my scalp, she had the best dentition, I got braces and a refill after I jumped off the balcony while resisting being flogged by my step-dad. What Folake has in looks, I make up for them in smartness and that was how we became so very close. I watched Folake fall in and out of love with seniors, with teachers, with those annoying corpers who were more interested in students like Folake than they were in those who really wanted to learn. I was never envious of Folake when we were in high school but maybe slightly judgmental.

Our university days came and it wasn’t any different, I always watched Folake troop in and out of the HOD’s office adjusting her breast button and every single time she would say the same words “He is the one manipulating and threatening me with my grades, Sade there’s nothing I can do other than tease my way to better grades”, ending every statement with a fake happy giggle. If I’m to blame anyone for what Folake did during our four years in the university, it would be her father, her brothers and every man she had ever met. I wanted to distance myself from Folake so bad when we were in our 4th year but it wasn’t any easy. She would always come to my room with a blood clotted cheekbone crying, it’s either her father beat her up or her brothers weren’t having it with her or so she made me believe. Who leaves their best friends when they need them most, not Sade.

After our final year, Folake left the country, of course I had always known it would happen, being her father’s only daughter, she had to complete the family legacy of holding a master’s degree immediately after the bachelor’s degree, or so I was made to believe. Folake’s father had sent her to Italy where she was going to stay with one of her brothers. I was left to just be on video calls with my sister, at least, the distancing I needed. Every waking minute, there was a call from Folake crying and telling me how much she missed home, “Is it not the dream you’re living? What do you want to come home for”, I asked her on one of those days she called sniffling in the tissue paper.

“Sade, you won’t understand, I just want to come home, it’s not by abroad life, I’m fed up  sis, this is not the life my father promised me” while still looking back and acting like she’s hiding.

One day, Folake called me, I was too busy to pick up, when I called her back, she picked up and within seconds her phone was snatched from her and all I could hear were screams and that minute I understood why Fola needed to come home. I screamed into the call begging whoever it was to leave her alone.

“I’m her boyfriend, I can do with her whatever I want”, Chris said while staring hard into the camera on Fola’s phone. I had met Chris, not in person but in all the uncomfortable boo’d up pictures Folake uploads.

“If you’re so interested in watching me beat up your sister, then there you go”, he set the camera and with my hands shaking, I set up my screen recorder and closed my ears while crying to every punch that landed on Fola’s stomach. Fola had texted me about being pregnant after I didn’t pick up and Chris was doing this to her……
