I used to think storytelling was only about “once upon a time” until I met the likes of our guest. There’s so much to learn on this conversation. Drop the magic confetti and let’s have ourselves an amazing show!!!
WNG: LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU?
Dimeji: My name is Dimeji. I’m a storyteller and creator.I’m that kind of creator who gets asked the weirdest questions. Like “brand storyteller? You mean you charge people for ‘once upon a time?”, or “is it not to press phone?” or “why are you asking me so many questions, I just want people to buy my product”. Oh yeah, I forgot to add, I believe in the power of the God given creative mind but people get trapped in the thinking that the whole point of life is to get a job, get money, get children, and die, that’s a bit depressing. So my goal is to change that world view. And help light the creative flame in all people all over the world. And my first objective? To change that narrative through content creation. To help these creators I see in the digital world, craft and share their message in a way the world wants to listen to, because there’s very few things as painful as spending hours on what you love, only to post on social media and get one like and one comment. Both of which were from you, so I do that by teaching the art of effective idea crafting and communication i.e Brand storytelling.
WNG: HOW DID YOU GET TO DEFINE YOUR NICHE + WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR BRAND?
Dimeji: My niche started with my ‘why’, my purpose. If you know why you’re here, you know who to serve, and what problems to solve. The ‘How’ though, took me a little while, It only got refined through trial and error and consistency. The favorite thing about my brand is the amazing people it attracts, because I make content the way I speak on a normal day. So it feels natural, it feels easy. But it took years of learning and refining things I didn’t know I would one day start making content about.
WNG: WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CREATIVITY?
Dimeji: I believe everything is connected. Its how you can use parables to explain larger concepts, or how a flower pattern can explain the structure of the solar system. So everyday, these dots are present, all the inspiration, all the problems, all the solutions, are in plain sight. And creativity is the ability of connecting all these dots to reveal a larger truth. So basically I get my ideas from everywhere, everyone, every problem and every lesson.
WNG: CREATIVE STRUGGLES & HOW YOU OVERCOME IT?
Dimeji: Connecting those dots every single day to make new content is a challenge I recently took on. It’s not easy, but it gets done regardless. Because its not a question of If I should post content today. The question is what am I posting today. Because there is 1 person out there who needs the value.
WNG:WHAT TYPE OF CONTENT DO YOU THINK SHOULD BE PART OF A BUSINESS OWNER’S STORYTELLING PLAN? (question by @moinc.ng)
Dimeji: You entered business for a reason, to solve a problem. Ask yourself what issues your target market has about those problems and provide the answers as content. If you’re a service provider, that works easy. If you’re a product provider, create content positioning your product as the solution to those problems. Don’t sell the product, or service, sell an idea, sell a solution, sell a story.
WNG: HOW CAN ONE USE STORYTELLING TO INCREASE CONVERSION?
Dimeji: People are tired of being hustled. They’re tired of being sold. Things have changed in the last few decades. People have moved from buying because they had to, to buying what they want. The competition (because of the digital boom) has only gotten steeper, so stop selling what you do, stop saying your product is the best, because they know it isn’t and they have options, share your ‘why’, people who believe your why will follow your business because they can connect with your motivation. That’s how you turn them into fans. Storytelling is about more than just word of mouth marketing. It is branding. Its how you present yourself. How you craft and communicate your message and sales is about trust. People will not pay those who they dislike or distrust (on a normal day), that’s where brand storytelling comes in. It defines and shares your brand message, in a way your target audience wants to hear, it builds trust & trust is the essence of sales.
WNG: YOU SEEM TO HAVE A STRONG TRIBE BEHIND YOU? WHAT’S THE SECRET?
Dimeji: Lol, do I? They’re wonderful people, I don’t deserve them (like legit, not out of false humility), but if I were to say something about building an engaged tribe (which is something people pay me for and you’re using style to learn), It is to care about them, to understand that you are not the hero, not of this story, they are. Their hopes and goals should be important to you, know their names. They are people, not numbers to make you feel good, and show up for them, consistently and uniquely. Don’t just drop motivational quote and go, authentically offer them value consistently over time, while seeing them as the hero of your brand story.
WNG: CAN WE GET CREATIVE TIPS FROM YOU?
Dimeji: Learn everyday, create everyday, and open your eyes. Just like this meeting has given me a week of content ideas, the answers are also right under your nose.

DIMEJI TO DIMEJI: How would you like to die? I want to go knowing I helped the people I was here to help. Money, posessions and all that are cool. But when you go, the world will divide your bank account amongst themselves. The only thing you take are the people you helped. So I want to die empty. Because I used all my gifts, all my dreams, and all my skills and ideas, to help the people who mattered. The people I was born to help and when i go. I want to look my childhood self in the eye and say “WE DID IT”. “The world is going to be hard on you. But I carried your hopes and dreams to the end” And then he’ll smile and ask me to buy him rice and beans in heaven. And yes, rice in heaven.
