FEATURED FUTURE: CECE OKONYA

May 14, 2020

You ever wondered if medical students can finesse the stress of their course and still be able to create content on social media? Today’s conversation is with an awesome Youtuber and Content Creator who is also a medical student. A total inspiration yeah? Grabbed your popcorn yet? Or chin chin? Okay fine groundnut, now let’s throw the magic confetti and have ourselves an amazing show!

WNG: Let’s get to know you

CECE OKONYA: Hi Gorgeous! My name is Cece Okonya and I am a Nigerian based YouTuber and a Content creator. I am a very much what anyone would call the ‘exception to the rule’ seeing that with all of this creative side going on I am a medical Student with a burning passion for the health care industry. I am multi-talented and not afraid to show it!

WNG: And we thought medical students were all about big books and no fun. How did you start your YouTube channel? Take us through your journey

CECE OKONYA: I’ve always known I would have a YouTube channel. I’ve always known the centre stage was made for me! I come alive in the spotlight. But it wasn’t till I actually sat behind a camera and created my first IGTV vlog that I knew this was actually the ‘ spotlight made specifically for me ‘.

Up until late 2019, I kept on pushing away starting my YouTube channel until a later ‘free time’ because I felt it was a lot – you know with medical school and beauty/lifestyle influencing. I finally pushed past those excuses and started creating for YouTube. It’s been the most fulfilling experience since then.

WNG: You’ve been good at it so far. What inspires the content you create? (question from @zubbey)

CECE OKONYA:My content is mostly inspired by

1.) Me: Lol ! Sounds vain but I sincerely want to tell my story. In as many ways as possible. I want to inspire others to live their truth. So that others can see that it’s okay to have a multifaceted career. When I just started out with content creation , I couldn’t find anyone like me with the same struggles I face as a medical student and content creator living in Nigeria . Just watching others made me feel like I was doing too much. I hope that just by being myself in the content I create I can inspire others to be the best versions of themselves.

2.) Other creatives: Mainly because a lot of people are delving into the content creation niche and that is absolutely okay. Just seeing them create mind blowing content and being consistent while at it triggers me to do better and be better.

WNG: I’m drawing inspiration from this. You seem to be more into the vlogging aspect of YouTube, how do you stay camera confident with people staring when you’re filming outdoors?

CECE OKONYA: That will forever remain a struggle. Because people will always stare and make snide comments. But first I’ve learnt to dress the part.

If I’m going to film outdoors then I take my time to look extra glam. I also take a friend along. Just having someone else with you makes it feel like you are just having a nice time out with the girls and recording it.

WNG: What equipments do you film with and how long does it take to film & edit a video?

CECE OKONYA: It depends on what platform I’m filming for but a basic setup would have a tripod, soft box, reflector and my phone. It takes me between 3-4 hours to film for IG and between 24hrs-7 days (when I film vlogs) for YouTube. That’s the easy part.
I can edit in 15mins- 1hr but I love to have standout edited videos so that takes longer. Sometimes spanning over 3 days because I’ll come back to it , review it and make better adjustments.

WNG: What collaborations do you look forward to?

CECE OKONYA: Basically collaborations with forward thinking creatives with the aim to inspire others as always.

WNG: Books or movies?

CECE OKONYA: Books definitely

WNG: If you can play a character in any of your favorite books, who would it be and why?
CECE OKONYA: Lara from smart money Arese’s book Smart Money Tribe. She is the fabulous Oil and Gas Executive and I love how her mind works. Very Smart and making that money. Goals there!

WNG: Lara is such an amazing character. She’s goals! Creative tips?

CECE OKONYA: Be consistent!
Always create with the intention of adding value!  Invest in yourself!  Learn, unlearn and relearn!

WNG: Do you have any big project we should look forward to?

CECE OKONYA: Actually Yes! But it’s too early to say anything.

WNG: We’re eager to see. Ready for your trick question. “When can net hold water”?
CECE OKONYA: Sponge I guess. I really want to check the internet. Final answer, I’ve given it thought and I don’t know lol.

WNG: It’s when the water is frozen

CECE OKONYA: Oh yeah! You win

WNG: Thank you for your time. This was fun!

CECE OKONYA: Thank you too! Keep inspiring.
